Winter Layering 101

Temperatures are dropping, snow is falling and I’m putting on my 9th layer. In other words, Winter isn’t coming Darling, it’s here!

Despite the freezing cold, I love winter fashion! The layering, cozy sweaters, coats and accessories come out to play and I find myself enjoying blending the different textures together. We need to make sure we are snug as a bug, just like our four legged furry babies.

STEP 1: The Base Layer

First step when dressing to brave the bitter cold is to always start with your base. I’m a personal fan of the TKEQ Taylor long sleeves, because it provides the full coverage and sweat-wicking features. The second-skin feel eliminates any potential bulk, making this the perfect base layer. If it is super cold, I’ll add a Lululemon Swiftly t-shirt for extra core warmth. For the base layer it’s important to choose something that is sweat wicking, because it works hard to keep you dry in the cool temperatures.

Step 2: The Middle Layer

Now, let’s start to build up the layers! This middle layer is the one that really helps retain body heat to protect us from the cold. Sweaters that are made from natural fibres means that the garment will be breathable! On the other hand, a snuggly sweatshirt is a guarantee way to keep you warm and cozy. I’ve been living in my equestrian athletics crewneck. On those -30C mornings at the barn, it’s always a good idea to add an extra thin knit layer underneath your sweater. Remember, you can always peel off layers when you heat up, so the more, the better!

Step 3: The Outer Layer

The outer layer is what shields you from the wind and snow (or rain for some of you, Darlings). With that being said, it’s essential to choose something that is waterproof, a personal favourite is my Konia mid-weight jacket. This layer will also add insulation by trapping the heat your body makes!

Step 4: The Accessories

Okay, we’re almost done, just the final touches! Something I absolutely cannot live without is a scarf, it keeps me so toasty during the bitter cold. It also blocks the wind when riding, making sure you’re as warm as can be- not to mention it completes your #rootd! On those bitterly cold mornings, you’ll also find me in a beanie for extra insulation and to keep my ears warm.
